Before You Buy a Tesla Model YL… Get Advice
Posted by Juliet Fernandez on

When buying a new family vehicle, it's easy to focus on features like safety ratings, fuel efficiency, technology and comfort. However, one important detail is often overlooked—will your child's restraint fit safely and correctly?
We've recently come across an important compatibility issue with the Tesla Model YL that highlights why checking before you buy is so important.
Tesla Model YL: Middle Row Child Restraint Compatibility
Not all child restraints can be installed in the middle seating position of the Tesla Model YL due to the shape of captain seats.
Several child restraint manufacturers, at the time of writing this post, including Britax and Infasecure, have not approve the installation of their restraints in the middle row of this vehicle.
This means that a restraint that worked perfectly in your current vehicle may not be suitable in a new one.
At this stage, Maxi-Cosi is the only manufacturer to have approved selected child restraints for use in the middle seating position, and these require an additional 300 mm extension strap for correct installation.
The following Maxi Cosi seats have been approved by Maxi Cosi as being suitable for a Tesla Captain seat:
| Maxi Cosi | Raia 360 | Must use 300mm extension strap |
| Maxi Cosi | Mico 12 with a split tether only | Must use 300mm extension strap |
| Maxi Cosi | Tuva / Luna | Must use 300mm extension strap |
| Maxi Cosi | Rodi | NA |
| Maxi Cosi | Titan Pro | Must use 300mm extension strap |
| Mother's Choice | Pulse / Focus | Must use 300mm extension strap |
Please note that most seats will fit well in the back row of the Tesla Model YL.
Why Compatibility Matters
Every vehicle is different. Anchor point locations, seat contours, buckle positions and installation requirements can all affect whether a child restraint can be installed safely and in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions. In this case the shape of the seat affects how the top tether sits which can compromise the fitting
Using a restraint in a seating position that has not been approved by either the vehicle or child restraint manufacturer can compromise both safety and compliance.
